Arc De Sunset: Keyhole Arch in Big Sur

Updated: Mar 10, 2021

Is there anything better than a sun setting over the ocean? A sun setting over the ocean framed by a natural rock formation such as Keyhole Arch!

Unfortunately, April was not the right time of the year for that to happen and the rock would just block the sun if you stand in front of the keyhole trying to catch the sun while it was setting.

So I put myself in the keyhole instead!

Keyhole Arch is located in Pfeiffer Beach and that beach is accessible at the end of a long residential street leading downhill from Pacific Coast Highway. State Park workers limit the number of visitors to Pfeiffer Beach by blocking the residential street at PCH. We had to come by three times throughout the day just to check if we could get in or not. Third time's the charm!

I grabbed books, games and blankets thinking we would hang out on the sand and take it easy the rest of the day.

It wasn't meant to be.

The wind was howling like a banshee and was so strong that sand was pelting us like a sandblaster. Maybe not as strong as a sandblaster but it sure felt like it.

There was a little corner where tide pools formed and mini-marine biologists could find some sea creatures like starfish, crabs and anemones.

There is a bathroom in the parking lot and no shower facilities.

Park entrance is cash only.
