Avenue of the Giants is a highway that goes through a giant redwood forest in Northern California. It was kind of confusing at first, but the forest that the Avenue of the Giants goes through is part of both National Park and State Parks. I read and re-read what I found in the internet, but I didn't really fully believe it until I went to the visitor center's gift shop and was able to buy both National Park AND State Park souvenirs.
If you're traveling south on the 101 from Crescent City, you'll pass by False Klamath, Klamath River, and finally, Waukell Creek Bridge. After Waukell Bridge, keep an eye out for Newton B. Drury Scenic Parkway and turn right into it.
You are now entering the Avenue of the Giants.
There are many opportunities for you to pull over and go on short walks into the forest. This is a great opportunity to watch the light play in-between the leaves and marvel at one of the largest living organism on earth.
There are different notable trees on the way to the Prairie Creek Visitor Center. And the visitor center is a must-visit. Aside from the fact that it's a great time and place for a bathroom break, there are some good hikes around the Visitor Center too,
If you walk a short ways towards the south, there is large probability that you will encounter elks. Hence the name, "Elk Prairie".
If you have time, drive down the mountain towards the coast, you will reach Gold Bluffs Beach. Further down is the famous Fern Canyon.
Don't speed. Don't block the road.
