Battery Point Lighthouse

Updated: Aug 30, 2020

235 Lighthouse Way, Crescent City, CA 95531

"Battery Point Lighthouse is perhaps the most visited structure in all of Del Norte County in spite of the fact it is only accessible at low tide. The rest of the day it is an island located just offshore of Crescent City at the foot of ‘A’ Street."

When I read that in the Del Norte County Historical Society website, I immediately put this lighthouse on my road trip itinerary. The opportunity to access an island by walking is too much to resist! Nevermind that I'll actually be walking on land to reach this in-reality-a-peninsula-not-an-island.

Unfortunately, said fantasy did not come to a fruition due to the fact that the tide was pretty high on the morning we were there. I was willing to wade through thigh-high Pacific Ocean water but the water was so cold my toes got frozen after only a few seconds in the water. I didn't even get an opportunity to find out how high the water really was on the submerged road! Though my big girl was game to wade through frigid waters, my little girl wailed non-stop at just the thought.

So I very reluctantly retreated and we walked around the grounds instead.

The nearby jetty is long and offers a better view of the lighthouse as well as Crescent City. If you look closely, you will find some wildlife on the jetty as well. Believe it or not, we found a family of raccoons along with numerous crabs there.

The beach below appears to be popular for those who want to barbecue on the sand just outside their vintage teardrop trailer.

If you have the time, Battery Point Lighthouse also offer tours.
