Caffeinating in LA: Part 6

Updated: Aug 5, 2023

So much coffee, so little tolerance...

11600 West Pico Boulevard Los Angeles CA 90064

Famous for their pink lattes, this coffee shop doesn't have indoor seating, but you won't miss sitting indoors because you're in the Sawtelle district of LA's West Side where the weather is more temperate. You order from a window on the wall (hole in the wall!). I had some misgivings when I was lifting up my latte up for a sip, but there was no need - it tasted just like a latte, the pink dye didn't affect the taste at all. Even better, the espresso actually tasted great!

GoodPeople had some great baristas serving great espresso drinks in a beautiful shop located around the Sawtelle area of LA's West Side. There is a giant outdoor dining space behind the shop with many picnic tables for eating, hanging out and/or working.

Amp Coffee is located on the front end of a recording studio right in the heart of NoHo District of the San Fernando Valley. The barista was beyond friendly - not overbearing or fake; she was simply genuinely interested, asked a thoughtful question, listened, and responded thoughtfully. The iced latte came super strong. I loved it. I'm not sure if that's how they usually make it, to fuel those jam sessions and power through late night brainstorming... or the barista truly listened to me when I said I walked in because I had a long day and it wasn't even half over and then gave my latte an extra shot. Either way, Amp serves awesome espresso drinks. AND... their space is fantastic!

1501 W. Sunset Blvd. Suite B, Los Angeles CA 90026

The first Stereoscope Coffee I saw and visited was in Newport Beach - I was ever so glad to find that they opened a location in LA! It was no surprise that it was on Sunset Blvd in Silverlake, though. The space is beautiful and always seem full of people catching up or working. The baristas are quick, friendly and accurate. I love walking into this shop and getting hit with the smell of freshly ground and brewed espresso.

Tang & Java is a desserts and coffee shop located in the west side of the San Fernando Valley. It is a great place for friends and family to hang out. They have different types of desserts (hot, cold, frozen) that even includes Filipino Halo-Halo! These desserts go well with the coffee they're serving... they also serve kape barako (Filipino coffee)! Adults and kids alike can get their fix and hang out on one of their indoor dining tables.

Cafe Dulce Cinco

210 E Olympic Blvd, Los Angeles CA 90015 (213) 238-8032

Cafe Dulce Cinco is another branch of Cafe Dulce. So glad they are expanding and sharing their must-order Blueberry Matcha drink to more people. Their espresso drinks are also very great! This particular location is right, almost, in the middle of downtown Los Angeles' Fashion District. So conveniently located for a mid-shopping spree refreshment. Wallet, beware!

I confess, I visited Boulon d'Amour in the West Adams district because the drinks looked very pretty. And after an experience with non-alcoholic cocktail coffee shop, I realized pretty and yummy doesn't need to be mutually exclusive. Verdict? The espresso rinks here are Pretty and Yummy. Update: They opened a location at the Westfield Century City mall.

Alchemist Coffee Project at the Pearl

687 S Hobart Blvd, Los Angeles, CA 90005

The spaces at both Koreatown locations are beautifully dark; the baristas were friendly and efficient; the Avo Toasts and pastries are tasty; but most importantly, the espresso drinks are strong and tasted great. And it doesn't seem to matter which location you visit.

This was the first independent espresso shop in this part of the San Fernando Valley that we noticed. Walked in hoping with all fingers (and even toes) crossed that they would be good and, prayers answered, Tortoni Caffe was! The owner introduced us to her Argentinian empanadas and we found our new favorite in this area. So glad they are getting bigger and better.

I read about the only tattoo and coffee shop in the Echo Park district of Los Angeles and decided to check it out. It did not disappoint. The green goddess space relaxes and energizes at the same time. The coffee does a great job of that too. I was wondering how they would pull off having both a tattoo and a coffee shop in the same space -- health department codes and all -- but they did. The operational spaces are very much separated. They weren't even operating at the same time when we visited. The tattoo portion is by appointment only.
