Fern Canyon

Updated: Aug 30, 2020

Fern Canyon is such a unique destination and it didn't take too much work to get there.

You have to drive a super dusty, practically-unpaved road for quite a bit to get to sea level from the 101 Freeway. And then you have to drive some miles on the same dirt road, but not downhill this time. Before you know it, you’ve reached a parking lot, which is also the trailhead to Fern Canyon.

It’s really difficult for me to call this a trail. The trail is easy and flat and short that it’s almost more apt to call it a “path”.

The diversity of what West Coast can offer is absolutely breathtaking --- California even!

Northern California has always been fog and redwoods to me — until this canyon. I never realized NorCal has any spot that could breed this many different kinds of ferns so abundantly!

Walking through this canyon, everything seems like it’s bathed in an emerald hue — there must be a hundred shades of green here!

Take Davison Road just south of the Prairie Creek Visitor Center all the way to sea level and continue following it all the way to the end where there’s a Dirt parking lot.

The trailhead at the end of the lot will take you to Fern Canyon.

There are small trails leading from the main trail. If you stick to the main trail - the most well-travelled, that will lead you to Fern Canyon.
