Glass Beach: Trash to Treasure

Updated: Mar 19, 2021

Yes, what you see is real glass.

No, you cannot take them with you.

Before "sanitation" was a thing, people used to dump their garbage over the cliffs and consider the job done. Out of sight, out of mind. Of course, we now know better. But what was trash has been transformed into a thing of beauty - literally!

These "glass" were once part of the trash and refuse that were chucked over the side. Decades of the ocean crashing the bottles against the rocks and the waves rubbing these pieces against each other and the sand has smoothed all sharp edges.

Alas, these little treasures were not meant for us to "find and keep". I read somewhere that it's actually illegal to remove any glass from Glass beach. This must not have stopped people from taking them anyway because on our visit here, it was a bit of a "game" to find glass pieces - the beach did not at all look like what it did in the photos I saw decades ago. I'm trying not to date myself but it seems inevitable.

Free parking for the public at the lot at the end of W Elm Street.

Public bathrooms are available.
