Guest House Museum

Guest House Museum is a great place to visit if you want to learn more about some local history. Not only was it one of the oldest standing building in town, but it was built from coastal redwoods to showcase the lumber that the town‘s major industry was harvesting.

I don’t know what type of architecture this house would be, but it was certainly more ornate than your usual log home. The woodworks around the window and door framings are noteworthy. The giant stained glass window is amazing.

The grounds are beautiful as well. The flowers were blooming in the middle of summer and the giant cross-section of the redwood is an effective visual tool on how these redwoods are one of the largest living organisms in the world!

The building is a testament to the logging industry and technology of the time: Electric lighting! Dumbwaiters! But the exhibits are what really caught my attention.

The Poyo and other indigenous peoples of the area were featured prominently in the displays. No attempts were made to whitewash the actions taken to wipe out the indigenous peoples of this land - every attempt at resistance was met with government-backed brutal action.

Artifacts and examples of their culture such as clothing and tools are on exhibit here. Audio of their language can be heard in recordings. I especially liked that.

The other thing that made this museum special was the volunteer when we were there. He was passionate about the local history. He was warm and welcoming to the guests. He was super friendly to the kids. Thanks for the milk-bottle caps!

This is a must-see when you're in Fort Bragg or Mendocino area. Let me know in the comments if you want to suggest other Mendocino sights.
