I call this the Bay Area's backyard. Seems like everyone and their dog goes to Tahoe to get away from the the urban jungle and do some outdoor fun. I wouldn't mind going there and just veg-out in a cabin or tent somewhere, but should you feel the need to actually see some sights, here are some suggestions.
The happenings-est place in Lake Tahoe. Heavenly Village has shops, restaurants and entertainment. It's a stone's throw away from the casinos, located within walking distance of some motels and has a gondola that can take you to the top of the mountain for some stunning Tahoe views. Or the ski slopes. Of course, the ski slopes.
Beautiful! Even more beautiful when you visit during the summer because the water is clear and cobalt and emerald and sapphire! Take the Vikingsholm Trail from the overlook right next to the parking lot, down to Vikingsholm (see below) to get to the beach where you can picnic and swim.
From an architecture point of view, this place is amazing! The former owner of Emerald Bay and Fannette island replicated Scandinavian style and method using local materials to build a truly unique home. Some interesting parts of the house are the wooden eaves, the lack of nails and the grassy roofs!
Lower Eagle Falls
From Vikingsholm, and still in Emerald Bay State Park, you can follow the Lower Eagle Falls trail to view a waterfall. The trail is so short and easy, I'm not sure you could even call it a trail! Disclaimer: My mom who walks with a cane will definitely classify this as a hard hike.
Rubicon Trail
If it sounds familiar, it's because it's the name you see plastered all over Jeeps. This is the trail Jeeps have to pass before they can have the honor of being called "Jeeps". No, I did not pass the test.
Small but packs a punch. The buildings are well-preserved. The displays are great. The view of the lake from the beach is outstanding. Makes me wish they would rent it out as a cabin.
Yes, the same Donner party that died during a snowstorm when they were trying to travel west and got stuck here.
It isn't really in Lake Tahoe, but this Old West style town is a popular day trip from Lake Tahoe. And it's not a mystery why! Their main thoroughfare, C Street, is just overflowing with bars. Sorry, saloons! Of course, there are cute gift shops, great restaurants, historic buildings galore, and a regularly scheduled gunfight too. You know what's funner than all that? The people. They came dressed for the party that is Virgina City!
For the famous Lake Tahoe crystal blue waters, round boulders and technicolor sunsets, the best place is Sand Harbor Beach.
An easy beach where the kids could walk several meters out into the water and still only be knee deep. It's also a popular spot for the kayak and canoe launches here.
Is quiet, uncrowded and a great place to view the sunset. It has a large playground for the kids, large parking lot and lots of picnic tables.
