We were wandering along the streets of Mendocino after an awesome breakfast in town and instinctively gravitated towards the ocean. Mendocino is such a small town that it didn’t take much walking before we reached the rugged cliffs of Mendocino Headlands State Park. It is so dramatic.
Take the short and easy Point Mendocino Trail for an invigorating walk and a great view of the ocean. The feel of the crisp cold air is so different from balmy SoCal beaches. The winds were strong so it was a bit scary standing close to the edge. It seemed like the winds here are always strong every time I visit.
A branch of the same trail will take you down to Portuguese Beach which is the beach you can see below Mendocino's Main Street. And boy do you want to walk down to the beach!
Driftwoods galore on this beach. Not sure if artists or just amateurs are the ones doing this but there always seem to be some sort of sculpture made out of driftwood on this beach. Sometimes, it's a hut; one time it was a scarecrow. I’m not sure visitors are allowed to remove them from the beach, but you could build something out of them and leave it for others to enjoy, like many have apparently done before us.

The above address is for you to google directions if you're coming from outside Mendocino. If you're already in town, just head towards the ocean and you're there.
