Mossbrae Falls: A California Treasure

Updated: Aug 30, 2020

I can't even remember where I first found out about this waterfall. All I know is that whenever I search for this waterfall, I can't seem to find any official website for this.

The reason for that might be because there is no safe way to access Mossbrae Falls at this time. Also, you’ll be trespassing through private property to get there.

VISIT AT YOUR OWN RISK.

I managed to piece together general directions on how to find this waterfall based on people's comments on various photos I've found. We had to turn around a handful of times because the path we tried did not land us in the right place. I can't even tell you how far your walk/hike will be because I lost track... not that I was keeping track to begin with. We must have walked a total of 7 miles -- but that's because we had a lot of trials and errors trying to get here.

We parked on the commercial and major street, Dunsmuir and walked to Scarlett which leads you through a super quiet and semi-secluded residential area leading to the Sacramento River.

ONCE AGAIN, VISIT AT YOUR OWN RISK.

We crossed the river to reach the ACTIVE railroad track that, according to everything I’ve gathered from comments and other people’s blogs, appears to be the easiest path to follow to reach the falls.

When I say active, I mean active. Three trains passed by before we even found the waterfalls.

I’ve read from various public park websites that they are working to create a safe trail that will lead to Mossbrae Falls without the use of the railroad tracks. Yey! Can’t wait! As soon as I find anything, I will post an update.

Look for a clearing in the trees before you reach the trestle bridge and go down the embankment towards the river. You should find the falls there.

Here's a rough map I made - when I said "rough", I really meant "rough" - that I hope would help you find Mossbrae Falls.

Yellow highlight is the path you will have to walk. Pink is where you could park. In other words, DO NOT park in the residential areas.
