Noyo Center for Marine Science

Updated: Sep 7, 2020

Noyo Center for Marine Science's Discovery Center located at Fort Bragg's Main Street might be small, but it packs a giant scientific punch.

Each activity and display is carefully curated not only to be interactive and entertaining, but for maximum educational value as well.

Speaking of displays, nothing will beat Noyo's full killer whale skeleton on display - the only complete killer whale skeleton. Fort Bragg was lucky enough to find a whole beached whale carcass, unlucky for the whale, or course. With the help of their local community college, they carefully transported and stripped the whale of flesh, carefully preserving the bones.

Yes, I'm aware of how graphic it sounds...

They also have an augmented reality sandbox that allows you to see how watersheds and topography are interconnected. Plus, it's just plain fun playing with a sandbox.

There is also this awesome geodesic dome that is supposed to make you experience being in deep sea from the comfort of a bench inside. Projected onto the walls are the flora and fauna you might encounter if you were in the deep ocean so that you are surrounded.

If you have kids, or are interested in marine biology, or the ocean, or watersheds, or skeletons, you should make sure you stop by here. In fact, I would put this in my top 5 things to see in Fort Bragg.
