Palmdale Day Trip

Updated: Apr 19, 2023

Only an hour north of LA, or two depending on what part of LA City you're from, Palmdale is an underrated destination. There's no better time than springtime to visit this northern portion of LA County.

Lamont Odett Vista Point

CA-14, Palmdale, CA 93550

Northbound on the 14 coming from LA towards Palmdale, you will notice that there's a turnout for a vista point. It might be worth your while to pull over at least once this lifetime, and read the informational displays explaining the California aqueduct.

You're driving this far up, you might as well drive over the musical road. In case you're wondering, the song's supposed to be William Tell's Overture. For those of us born in the previous century (towards the middle and not the end), this is the theme for "The Lone Ranger". It's barely recognizable. But you're here so you might as well go for it!

We are very fortunate to have a reserve dedicated to preserving our state flower so very close to us here in the Greater LA. With our record-breaking rains this past winter, Spring 2023 would likely be epic wildflower season as well!

Check the website for dates and times. Though this is nowhere near the preserve, you can head on over here after your poppy field photoshoot because, let's get real, you'll need something else to do after driving all the way here to take photos of the flowers. The Poppy Festival is substantial. All the requisite fair foods are sold here, there are petting zoos (saw a real wolf and petted a chinchilla!), NASA stuff (coz you know, NASA and other test flights are based here), stage shows and kid zones.

If you love planes, flying or just plain engineering, this is a great small FREE museum right next to Palmdale Regional Airport. Check the website for business hours because it's more likely to be closed than open.

For great Mexican food that will satisfy your hunger and staff that will restore your faith in the food service industry, come to Don Chato. It's near Blackbird Airpark.
